Cultivating Peace, Love, and Hope in Haiti
6 MILLION HAITIANS
Living a Culture of Love and Peace
For decades, the Haitian population has endured periods of crisis, and the situation of severe insecurity has significantly worsened in recent years without finding a lasting solution. Seeking refuge elsewhere, approximately 578,074 people are currently displaced in Haiti, a record number for 2024 according to UN experts. This situation, caused by the escalation of gang violence and political instability, places Haiti at the top of the list of countries with the highest number of internal displacements linked to criminal violence. Displaced individuals live in difficult and precarious conditions. In particular, populations in metropolitan urban areas, especially Port-au-Prince and its surroundings, are forced to move from one neighborhood to another to escape gangs in conflict, thus putting their lives in danger. These forced displacements lead not only to material instability but also to profound psychological trauma, especially among children, who are the most vulnerable to this ongoing violence. The resources in the provinces hosting these displaced people are severely limited, exacerbating local social and economic tensions.
These situations of repeated violence highlight the urgent need to implement safe strategies to establish peace in Haiti. Although addressing and responding to conflicts and establishing security remain essential, these measures are not enough to ensure lasting peace and prevent the recurrence of such events. This is why investing in prevention remains a priority and represents a much more cost-effective strategy in the long term.
Spreading peace education programs is one of the essential aspects to be utilized in this context. Faced with these challenges, the IDEO Foundation and the Ti Souf Foundation have deemed it essential to launch an innovative program entitled “Sow Love, Reap Peace.” This ambitious program aims to promote a culture of peace through targeted educational interventions in schools, families, and neighborhoods in Haiti, based on the values of love and solidarity. The program seeks to offer young Haitian adults, men and women, who have experienced trauma and live in fragile neighborhoods, training based on a holistic approach to peace, taking into account the physical, emotional, spiritual, and material dimensions of individual well-being. This model of integral development will allow these trained agents to spread the acquired skills and values across the country, creating a powerful leverage effect that propagates the principles of peace and resilience through a true network of solidarity and community transformation
In the development of any human being, education plays a fundamental role. However, it should not be limited solely to the accumulation of knowledge aimed at obtaining a traditional diploma. It must also contribute to the integral development of the individual. In this sense, a holistic approach to establishing peace is essential and should be advocated. Achieving a climate of peace is inseparable from a change in mindset, as well as education in emotional, spiritual, and material freedom.
This program aims to create a network of young Haitian men and women trained as Peace Agents, providing them with expertise in emotional, spiritual, and financial intelligence, along with leadership and entrepreneurship skills. These agents will be equipped to initiate and lead peace initiatives in their communities and will use weekly video capsules to reinforce messages of peace. This process will seek to create a positive ripple effect at the national level, amplifying peace messages and catalyzing a movement for lasting change.
The specific objectives of this program are to:
Train 50 young Haitian adults as Peace Agents to become top trainers in emotional, spiritual, and financial intelligence, as well as in leadership and entrepreneurship, ensuring that they effectively impart these skills in their communities.
Deploy the 50 trained Peace Agents to replicate the training program in their own communities, using the acquired skills to train other young people and promote a culture of peace.
Produce and distribute weekly video capsules created by the Agents to share messages of peace and the experiences gained during their training. These videos will be broadcast on various platforms and social media networks to maximize their reach and strengthen the program's impact on a national scale.
The innovation of this program lies in its ability to integrate the physical, emotional, spiritual, and material dimensions of individual well-being. By fostering a harmonious balance in these aspects, participants will not only experience personal enrichment but also be prepared to become agents of change in their communities. This holistic development model enables the agents to spread these skills and values across the country.
This program is particularly aimed in the short term at working directly and in person (exceptionally via Zoom) with young people from various vulnerable backgrounds, most of whom are currently emotionally exhausted, deprived of housing, work, education, and justice, and discouraged by a future marked by a total lack of opportunities. The risk of severe depression, suicidal thoughts or attempts, and the temptation to leave the country or join gangs remains very high for this category of vulnerable individuals. Fifty (50) young people from fragile or nearby neighborhoods have already started receiving this training to become “Peace Agents.”
While implementing psychological support programs for these young people to help them heal from their traumas, it is also essential to offer them a prevention program that will help establish true and lasting peace in Haiti.
However, in the medium and long term, this approach will also indirectly affect the families, friends, colleagues, and immediate surroundings of these Peace Agents.
Phase 1: Training of Peace Agents
Fifty responsible citizens, taking charge of their own lives, will first be able to apply the skills and concepts learned to their personal lives. Additionally, guided by competent trainers from the IDEO Foundation such as Roseline and Mélodie Benjamin, psychologists and Peace Agents, Frédérique Clermont, an entrepreneur, and Dr. Thierry Laplanche, a gynecologist and expert entrepreneur, they will be equipped to share the information received and lead the “Sow Love, Reap Peace” program. This will help spread the Culture of Love and Peace in their respective communities or other neighborhoods that can benefit from this initiative.
Phase 2: System Creation
A structure or system will be established to facilitate the spread of this approach across the 10 departments of the country and within the diaspora in the near future.
Phase 3: Deployment
The newly trained Peace Agents will be ready to propagate this Peace education in Haitian communities.
The impact of this program is beyond measure. Participants will develop a new mindset and adopt behaviors that will influence both their immediate and distant surroundings. Additionally, many of them are highly active on social media and will contribute through their engagements to raising the level of positive energy, reaching an unlimited number of people.
The program will initially span two years, providing appropriate teaching and support to participants.
To help us sow love and reap peace in every family and community of Haiti.
